If laundered carefully your Littlelamb reusable nappies will last for successive babies, leading to even greater savings and then they still have a resale value via the online auction sites.
A few tips on making your nappies last longer
*Always close over the Velcro tabs prior to laundering as otherwise the hooks will snag on any lint passing by, reducing their effectiveness.
*Wash reusable nappies at mainly 30˚c and a cool rinse. A hot wash every now and then is OK but regular hot washing will affect the life of the Velcro and elastic.
*Do not use any kind of fabric softener as this will coat the fibres reducing absorbency.
*Do not use any kind of sanitizer. It was OK for cotton nappy squares in grandma’s day but on a modern shaped nappy it’ll affect the Velcro and elastic. A classic case in point - Napisan. It sounds like it should be something OK for nappies and it was when it was first marketed during the days of terry squares. Napisan's main ingredient is sodium percarbonate which when added to water turns into hydrogen peroxide. Need I say more! Hydrogen peroxide will eat away at the elastic and Velcro of all modern nappies. If that's not bad enough, hydrogen peroxide has a tendancy to turn undyed yarn a slight pinkish hue.
*Try and avoid a drier when possible. The fluff you clean from the drier filter has to come from somewhere! It's OK to tumble nappies as all the component parts will withstand the heat but the more you tumble dry anything the more fibres you lose.
